Removing Asbestos

Before starting asbestos removal work, asbestos products require analysis and assessment to determine the potential for fibre release, the appropriate removal method and the measures necessary to control exposure to asbestos fibres.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 details the current legislative classifications for asbestos removal which now fall into the following categories:

Non-Licensed Asbestos Removal

This includes products where asbestos is contained in a more stable form or matrix which will significantly reduce the risk of exposure to asbestos fibres, if disturbed.

Notifiable and Licensed Asbestos Removal

Other asbestos products fall into either of the categories below and involve a qualified professional carrying out an assessment of the product, based on analysis and condition, to establish its stability and the appropriate classification for removal

1. Notifiable Non-Licensed Work (NNLW)

Asbestos products assessed to be of a lower risk of fibre release, provided they are removed following HSE guidelines and safe working methods, fall into this category. The HSE require prior notification of removal of asbestos products within this category.

2. Licensed Asbestos Removal Work

Products assessed to be a higher risk fall into this category. Governance involves following strict procedures and safe working methods to control release of asbestos fibres during removal. The HSE require prior notification and work cannot progress until a licence has been granted to proceed.

However, Asbestos in good condition should remain in place. It can be managed and monitored for any deterioration or damage. Asbestos removal will need to be considered where a product has been damaged or is due to be disturbed whilst carrying out work.
